1729 - The Beggar's Wedding is the first opera performed in Leeds

1771 - Thomas and Sally is the first opera performed in Leeds' first theatre ('The Theatre')

1832 - Il Baribere di Siviglia is the first opera performed in Leeds not in English

1853 - The English Opera Company perform Maritana, marking the rise of touring opera companies

1878 - Il Trovatore is performed at Leeds Grand Theatre, the first opera performed at the venue

1890 - Leeds' oldest amateur company, Leeds Amateur Operatic Society, perform for the first time (HMS Pinafore)

1911 - Ernst Denhof's company perform Wagner's Ring Cycle in Leeds

1978 - Opera North launches in Leeds with Samson and Delilah
